Entry conditions for the MICROSOFT WTW Contest 2008
1. GENERAL
The Microsoft WIN THE WEB Contest 2008 (“Contest”) is a Central-Eastern Europe-wide, 24-hour web application development contest and is being held by Microsoft Deutschland GmbH, Unterschleissheim, Konrad-Zuse Str. 1. (“Contest organizer” or “Microsoft”).
The Contest is developers’ competition and is running parallel in several Central-Eastern European countries (“Area”).
The goal of the Contest is promoting the high level web development skills at Universities and also in the web industry space, and enabling web development communities around Microsoft technologies to grow and establish themselves.
The Contest will be executed in one phase, in 24 hours. The challenge of the Contest is the web development of 1 main mandatory task and 3 optional small tasks in teams of 3 people. The Contest will be running parallel at physical locations in all participating Central Eastern European countries. The exact locations as well as the dates of the Contest will be published at the Contest website (http://www.mswtw.com/). The Contest is anticipated to run between 17-18 May 2008. The entry condition of the Contest is enrolling a mini web application to the Contest portal (http://www.mswtw.com/) developed by the registrants in accordance with the instructions given under Section 5.
The Contest will be evaluated on two levels. Local prizes will be distributed in all participating Central Eastern European countries. The Area prizes will be distributed to the Area Winners only.
Evaluation process is defined under Section 4.
2. ELIGIBILITY
Developers eligible to participate are all users who have registered for the Contest at the Contest portal (http://www.mswtw.com/), are aged at least 18, fully understand and acknowledge that the attendance of the Contest is within one 24-hours stretch with minimal intermissions (as described in Section 5) and the team they joined to has uploaded a mini web application that they have programmed themselves in accordance with the instructions given under Section 5 between 10.03.and 14.05.2008.
Employees of Microsoft or companies affiliated with Microsoft, employees of the agencies involved in implementing the Contest and their immediate family and members of their household may not enter the Contest.
Participation in this Contest is free of charge and is not conditioned by or linked to the purchase of any product or subscription to any service.
3. DATA PROTECTION
Microsoft has an obligation to protect your data. The data collection and use policy outlined at http://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx shall apply.
By registering for the Contest and participating for the prizes, you acknowledge you have read Microsoft privacy policy and agree for your personal data to be used and processed in the way anticipated in the policy and giving your consent.
4. PRIZES
Evaluation process
The Contest will be evaluated by our expert teams on two levels (local level as well as Area level), based on the following criteria: Originality, Software Technique, Design and Utility.
The web applications enrolled as a result of the 24 hours development Contest will be evaluated by the local organizer teams in all participating Central-Eastern European countries within 24 hours after the Contest. All the participating countries have the right to set up their own expert team for evaluation. The local winners will be announced at the Contest closing ceremony, the date of which will be announced at the Contest website. According to the evaluation by the local teams local prizes will be handed over at the closing ceremony to the local winners in all participating Central-Eastern European countries.
All web applications enrolled as a result of the 24 hours development Contest will be evaluated also separately by the Area organizer team within 1 week after the Contest. The Area organizer team has the right to set up its own expert team for evaluation. The Area winners will be announced on the websites after the evaluation period in 1 week after the Contest. According to the evaluation by the Area evaluation team Area prizes will be distributed separately to the Area winners only. The Area winners will be notified by email.
The decision of both the local and Area organizer teams will be final and binding.
Winners
1 winner student team and 1 winner company team (both with 3 developers) will be selected from each participating country and awarded with local prizes.

Prizes
Local prizes: can vary per organizing country and will be announced at the Contest website (www.mswtw.com) before the start of the Contest in April 2008. The approximate value of the local prizes will be announced also in April. Area prizes: will be announced at the Contest website (www.mswtw.com) before the start of the Contest in April 2008. The approximate value of the local prizes will be announced also in April.
Prizes shall not be awarded in cash and cannot be redeemed for cash or other benefits in kind. The winner shall bear all costs, taxes and fees relating to winning a prize. Microsoft reserves the right to replace the prizes with another prize of the same or higher value in the event that the prize is not available either in full or in part. No guarantee claims can be made against Microsoft Germany GmbH or other companies involved in the Contest in relation to the prizes.
The winners will be informed in writing by e-mail and shall agree to the publication of their name on the website. The winners must reply to this e-mail by sending an e-mail with their first name, surname and address within 5 working days. If the winner does not respond by e-mail within this period, the next closest winner will be contacted.
Microsoft shall not be held liable for misdirected or lost e-mails, registrations. Microsoft assumes no liability for lost, damaged, misdirected or delayed entries or for any technical problems affecting the end result of the Contest or participation therein.
5. PARTICIPATION
Developers must follow the following steps to participate in the Contest:
- Register at the Contest website
a.Choose your country where you will be attending the Contest.
- Sign up and give your contact details (including an indication whether you are a student)
- Create and/or join a team (3 developers per team)
- Programme 1 mini web application per team and upload it to the Contest website. You can chose from the web applications listed here with the condition that all the solutions will be released as Open Source and shared on the Contest website. Details on technical requirements and other terms of use are described under Section 7.
- Attend the Contest in person in the previously (during registration) chosen country location.
a. If you participate as a student, please bring a valid student ID. If you do not submit a proof of your student status, you will be participating under the category “Company”.
b. Bring your personal computer; you are also allowed to bring any kind of computing devices and tools.
c. You can use any kind of support for working on the tasks of the Contest including internet (network will be provided by the Organizers), professional materials, books, etc.; you can communicate freely with other teams during the Contest, consult outside experts and resources by means of electronic communication, telephone.
d. During the 24 hours you cannot leave the location of the Contest, with the following exception(s):.
(i) participants will be allowed any breaks for refreshment and may leave the location for that purpose (refreshment and washroom facilities will be provided on-site; you are allowed to bring your own refreshment). Each entry to and exit from the Contest location will be recorded. If you exceed the time of permissible absence of 1 hour , you will be disqualified;
(ii) participants may decide, at any time during the Contest, to leave the Contest, for medical or any other reasons. This will result in the participant’s disqualification.
e. You will be required to complete the main task of the Contest as instructed by the Contest organizers, the remaining 3 small tasks will be optional.
Limit for registration: 30 teams per participating country (on a first come, first serve basis).
6. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS AND TERMS OF USE
Microsoft (Microsoft affiliates in the organizing countries) will provide the necessary network for the Contest.
The working machines (personal computers) are to be provided by the participants.
The recommended technical requirements for the personal computers are the following:
- P4 class CPU(or higher)
- 512+ MB memory
- 10 GB of free space (for Visual Studio and other Devtools)
- Wireless network adapter or 10/100Mbit network card
7. WARRANTIES/ PROPERTY RIGHTS / ASSIGNMENT OF RIGHTS / AUTHORISATION
By registering for the Contest, you warrant to us that any material you and your team submits to us is your own original work and that you own the copyright and any other relevant rights. In particular, you warrant that the web applications entered do not breach any rights held by third parties. You acknowledge that any breach of these warranties may cause us damage or loss and you agree to indemnify us in full and permanently against any third party liabilities, claims, costs, loss or damage (including consequential losses) we incur as a result of publishing material you submit to us. You grant Microsoft the non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable right to share the web applications worldwide, in an open source manner and free of charge on the Contest website after the end of the Contest and thus to also make it available to third parties. In particular, this includes the right to make it available to download, publication and distribution rights, the right to modify the web applications and the right to promote the web applications in all media formats. You exempt Microsoft from any claims made against Microsoft as a result of the web applications. This includes reasonable legal and defence costs. Microsoft accepts no liability in respect of any materials submitted by you or your team.
You further represent to us that (i) you are entering into the Contest at your own risk and responsibility, being aware that the Contest requires an intensive 24-hour working session at the Contest location with only minimal intermissions for refreshment; (ii) you are not aware of any reasons that would prevent you from participating in the Contest. Microsoft accepts no liability in respect of any claim resulting from inaccurate or untrue representations in this regard.
